8 Tips for Conducting an Excellent Remote Interview

Follow all the same advice you would for a traditional interview in terms of showing up early and dressing appropriately. Practice so that the technology will feel invisible to you and your interviewer. You can practice with anyone — it doesn’t have to be a professional connection. Job interviews are nerve-wracking no matter how they take place, but virtual interviews are especially daunting. You’re trying to connect with the interviewers while dealing with the ins and outs of cameras, background noises, and potential internet troubles. Just as communication is crucial when you work remotely, meetings are also huge.

Give examples of some of the things you’ve accomplished that didn’t require anyone else’s support or supervision, and be sure to emphasize them on your resume as well. The relationship between an employer and a remote employee is one that’s founded on trust and understanding. Employers want to know that you’re someone who really gets their company, from what the firm’s overarching goals are to the reasons why they’re remote—and how it works. While you may not go into the interview with a backup plan, it doesn’t hurt to have an alternate ready to go . Make sure you’re proactive and communicate efficiently and clearly with the company, and you can still ace the interview.
